Television - Food and Fitness
Its unusual for this magazine to examine any part of the media, as we perform in the same circus. However, as the business publication of record for this part of the world, we felt we could offer our readers a look behind any door, if its an interesting story.
When Janet Stewart, a CTV news anchor in Winnipeg, jumped to CBC news in January, it was significant event for CTV viewers. CTV has 44 percent of all viewers watching the news at six, while CBC has nine percent. Quite a gap, and one would wonder why someone would leave a leading station. Each station has its own news ideas and brand of news, and viewers judge their worth for themselves, which is part of the answer for viewer split. Some people never watch the news, getting their fill by listening to their car radio, or the Internet, or ignoring information altogether, which is fine if you like to live in a current-affairs void.
If you watch the news, youll likely be watching CBCs The National with Peter Mansbridge or CTV National News at 11:00 with Lloyd Robertson. Many catch the local supper-hour news package, because they dont want wars stories before they go to bed. Some nights, its remarkably tough to stomach. But, like it or not, to be informed, you have to take the bad with the good.
We examine television news by taking you inside CBCs newsroom. To be fair, one day does not represent the full picture, but it provides some insight into how news decisions are made. We also explore the importance of news anchorwoman Stewart to CBCs news delivery. You can judge for yourself. We thank CBCs newsroom boss Cecil Rosner for lobbying to get us into the news meeting. We hope you enjoy our offering.
Also in this issue, we introduce two new columnists: Fitness Fanatic by Vic Peters and a new restaurant review column, On the Town by Brye Ponto. Vic is a full-time private fitness coach, and Brye has a background in restaurants and journalism. And business people do go out for lunch and dinner a fair amount. We hope you enjoy her review of Oui Bistro.
Bon appétit and take the stairs. See you next issue.
