Who We Are Honoring

Every year for the past 19 years MANITOBA BUSINESS Magazine has honored business leadership in the province with the Entrepreneur of the Year Award. Then several years ago, as a result of having so many deserving companies, we added The Best in Business Practices Awards to look after the overflow of candidates. There are five companies in that category whose stories are in this edition.

Usually, companies receiving awards are privately-owned, but not always. Usually one individual receives the E of Y Award, but not always. This year, for the first time, is a not always year, as there are two people who will be honored as Entrepreneurs of the Year for a special reason. One without the other couldnt have swung one of the largest, most immense, contemporary new gold mine deals in the history of this province.

The deal was done by, Hugh Wynne (miner) and Dale Ginn, (geologist/mine manager) the principal movers behind the new gold mine San Gold Corporation at Bissett that has created 200 sold jobs for an area really needing employment.

Over the years, this magazine has had a special interest in mining, and mineral exploration, and the people who make a business of it like diamond drillers, miners, geologists, and all the corollary businesses and services.

Our selection committee agreed with the idea that there should be two equal recipients given the nature of the mine itself and how it came to be.

Both Wynne, 75, and Ginn, 42, brought their own talents to the deal and taking the company public. Their efforts and understanding of what had to be done made the reopening of the old San Antonio gold mine a reality. They created 200 jobs in a strategic plan that is to be admired. So we congratulate them their contributions to the provincial economy and much good luck in the future.

As well, there are five Best in Business Practices Award stories that in most cases illustrate the drive and will to build businesses. They are Grannys Poultry Cooperative, Dominion Divers, HED Insurance & Risk Services, Dawson Bay Builders and kisquared. Each and every one of these companies is part of the provincial business ecosystem that makes livelihoods for all the people who work there. These are not rehearsal companies, they dont use paper money and they all have bankers behind them. Their success is based on their abilities day in and day out, year over year. We at MANITOBA BUSINESS thank them for doing what they do and wish them all the best in their endeavors.
